Ployester resin
« on: October 08, 2016, 02:50:23 PM »
Has anyone  ever built a Tolman Skiff using polyester resin instead of epoxy resin? The polyester is much less expensive and I know there can be some issues with blisters.  Any advise would help.

Not as waterproof.

Could it be done? Yes

Would you want to spend all that time building a boat that is much more likely to have rot issues? No

Do the commercial guy use a lot of poly over ply? Yes, but usually the hulls they do that on are solid glass.

Ebond epoxy is around $30 / gallon.

I don't have a lot of epoxy experience, but Ebond is working great for me.

Don't use polyester resin.  It's not a structural adhesive like epoxy.  Just not suited for a stitch and glue boat.

This is a lesson on where to cut corners and where not to! Definitely do "NOT" use polyester resin, or you will be back wondering how to salvage your time and investment in plywood and glass cloth. The sad thing is, if you go down this path, salvage won't be an option, you will just be creating landfill fodder.

Sounds to me from all these answers if you do use polyester you will need to change your forum name to flapjack after a couple of years on the water. I had the same question to myself when I started and searching here and there led me to not use it.
