trailor hunting
« on: September 16, 2017, 09:30:26 AM »
still doing the home addition, so haven't started the boat yet. however, its prime time around here to scrounge some boat parts.   I'm still intending on building a widebody, but am tempted endlessly with that jumbo! In either case the boat will be 23 to 24 feet long probably between 2000 to 3000 lbs. The question is what kind of trailer can I make work in either case.  I can weld and have built and rebuilt trailers before.  I'm looking  score a trailer on the cheap and rebuild it to my specs. What do you all think I should be lookin for in terms of length and capacity.

I can tell you my 27' jumbo is 5500 lbs on the trailer axles, probably 300lb tongue weight, this is fully loaded for a week long camping trip.  Trailer weight is 1,300 lbs on the axles, 50 lbs tongue weight.  4,500 div. by 27 this should give you a good per foot weight on a jumbo.

Salt water use I highly recommend galv. or alum. trailer.

thanks for the reply.  thats got me around 4000 lb with a 24 ft jumbo.  99% inland so no salt water.  What do you pull your's with? I hoped to be lighter than that.  Anybody know what as 23'6" widebody fully loaded  weighs.  I know there are some other topics on here re the widebody weight--I'll try and look up there.  so regardless of the weight, if I have a 24 foot boat, I'd need about 3 feet extra for the tongue ? so about 27 foot total?

Looks like a widebody with cabin and the short top would weigh between 2200 and 2500 lb.

My 22' cabin/pilothouse widebody weighed 1600# bare hull.  No motor or any gear, gas etc included.  I think I tend to build lighter than most guys though.
