Long/Short Shaft

Typically  would is want to use a short or long shaft on a 21' wide body?

Long shaft only. Short shaft requires transom mod and will result in associated Issues of motor well depth. I can't see what advantages there could be, but I'm willing to listen if anyone has some to offer.
