How well does epoxy cure to PVC pipe?
« on: December 17, 2013, 04:10:59 PM »
I need to run rigging thru-deck tube vertically under the consoles and a piece coming up to the dry well. How well would scuffed up PVC pipe work? Was thinking of. 1/2 fillet  with cloth to glue it in

I used 3M 5200 also.  Make a nice fillet of caulking around the pipe and you'll be good to go.

I installed a pvc pipe in the deck inside the pilothouse to allow a fuel hose to penetrate the belly tank. Occasionally washout the deck there and wanted to keep the fuel tank compartment dry so just used a thickened(fg fibers) epoxy fillet to seal pipe. Seems to be still plenty strong and bonded well. Sealed hose with a piece of foam. Renn of course speaks negatively of epoxy bonding to pvc but mostly that is in reference to having a pvc pipe going thru the transom for the deck-drain. Depending on whether you sealed deck with Rhino-Liner (or Durabak like us) that would also seal the joint too. Also depends on where the pipe drains too. B & B

It has excellent adhesion, as long as the PVC is clean and roughed up.

PL Premium also has outstanding adhesion to wood/PVC.  It is the only thing holding on my rub rails.

I completely agree with the above.

One thing I will say: when it starts to part from the epoxy, it is super easy to peel it apart, even if the above is adhered (yuk, yuk, yuk) to.

I have used it as a form to make fiberglass tubes though. I usually coat it with olive oil (common and non-toxic) and then wipe it with a rag before rolling on the FG. It slides out with some effort (but it isn't really resistant to parting).
