Did anyone plane off a portion of the outside edges of your bottom panels to get a little better match between those edges and the edges of the chines? I am ready to attach my chines and a little nervous about the upcoming matching.

The saying I would remember, "you can patch a hole big enough to throw a cat through." or very close to that. If in doubt use angle blocks waxed or covered with visqeen to hold it in place. Cover the underside gap with masking tape. The joint gets taped on both sides so it will literally be bomb proof!

When we built our 20ft Standard I planed the bottom panels from where the curve started forward to the bow, the closer I got to the bow the more I had to plane. If you dry fit the side panels it's pretty easy to tell where and how much to plane. The planing really helped the fit on the inside. We also braced the bottom panels at the back to get the chine as straight as possible.

I am taking Dr. Cannon's advice, and so far none of the fillets have been the size of a cat. More to come - stay tuned.
That being said, the bonding looks good. I am going with just epoxy and wood flour and I am saving the micro-balloons and silica for later. I am impressed with the strength of straight wood flour with joints that will later be covered with more epoxy and blankets of fiberglass. My understanding is micro-balloons do not add strength, and silica is best for vertically leaning joints.

PS - Medical issues are significant impacts, speaking from personal experience. Go for it when you can boys - life is shorter than you expect.

Tom, I may be too late to respond to this, but no, you don't need to plane the edges of the plywood for fit in that joint. See the pictures on pages 114 and 125 in the book. Just get the inside edges to meet leaving a crater to be filled with thickened epoxy. A Gap filled with epoxy here is better than a tight wood to wood joint.

I planned my 1/2 bottom panels and then faired my 3/4 chines. Looks like this.

I did not plane the bottom to chine or chine to side connection, just left it open. After the flip, I filled these with a wood flour/epoxy mixture before taping. See attached.

But note that I used the Alternative Build Order, which means I never built the bottom right side up. The entire inside of the hull was glassed to together after flipping.
