Adding Cleats any brand recommended
« on: June 09, 2017, 06:11:33 AM »
Has anyone added cleats to their Tolman after it was finished? I pull a halibut anchor using a buoy system and it can produce a lot of stain on my aluminum boat, any recommendations on a good cleat that comes with a good backing plate and mounting hardware? Thanks

Just be sure to get a cleat with four mounting holes rather than two. Somewhere or other I have pictures of a big steel two hole cleat on a dock, hitched to a smaller four hole cleat on a boat. After one stormy night the big two hole cleat had bent its mounting bolts over. The four hole cleat showed no movement or damage

I bought seven off of EBay solid cast Stainless Steel. They had/have two threaded rods protruding from the base. They came with nylock nuts and a large backing plate. Very solid! I wasn't trusting the ones mounted with screws, and wanted them to withstand abuse.
I just added two more at the front of the cuddy on either side. The studs were not long enough so I unscrewed the threaded rods and used Stainless bolts to attach them. Worked great, very solid.
