A Tolman Skiff mystery to be solved... Alaska or Everywhere?
« on: August 22, 2020, 04:08:14 PM »
One of my YouTube viewers asked this question about the Tolman today.  As I'm new to everything Tolman I had no response to give.

He said: "The Tolman skiff is an amazing boat ....for the Baering Straits and it's unique distances between waves ...from what I have heard  was Tolmans main influence in design as he lived there....from what I gather it's the main reason most people didn't opt for them as the distance between waves in Alaska is different to other ocean's...??.. would it perform better in Alaska???.......I am sure that's just for big loads like commercial fishing for instance that such a technicality would make a difference.....good to have these facts however.

I appreciate any input.

Rene

The only thing that I can think of, ocean to ocean or sea to shining sea, is that the combination of prevailing winds versus the local area's directions in the currents and the proximity to land and its effects .  But anyone that has been on the ocean(s) much knows that while average may exist, it's never average!  I'd ignore the sea to sea differences for the most part.

And if old memory serves, I believe Renn suggested that the 18' to 22' lengths work best in Kachemak Bay, due to the type of chop common in that area.  But again ... it's a big world.

I'm seeing people all over the place, both coasts and lots of countries building them so they must know something right? Didn't know how to answer the question so I thought I'd ask you pros :-)

On tuna runs, I usually see several completely different wave conditions in a single day. Sometimes it's hard to believe you're on the same ocean you were 10 miles ago.

Yep

I agree!

There are Tolmans all over the world.  It's more about who is the captain of the boat!  How much experience the captain has.  We all know how tough these boats.

The ONLY area that I recall Renn mentioning boat length versus wave separation was K-bay ... a very specific answer that in no way says this is the only place his boats work (that would be hogwash).  He also spoke of the deep and steep swells in the Shelikof Strait (between mainland and Kodiak) and how well the Widebody did ... feedback from an owner and mentioned in his books as well, but in now way mentioning boat length versus ocean.  Anyone with experience knows that virtually any combination of heights, directions, timing, etc can happen anytime anywhere.  A good boat is a good boat and vice versa.

I recall a night in Shelikof Strait...! Never spent so much time underwater in my entire life!
