Re-engined 2003 J24/Sea-trial.
« on: May 03, 2019, 02:42:38 PM »
Taken most of winter but finally up/running. Decided the 1999 F100 with #3700hrs just was not reliable for offshore runs and went to a Suzuki 140. Hyd. setback is perfection for adjusting engine height. The HT9.9 got nailed by another boat at the ramp last yr. and after a long search found a T8 as a parts doner. Hint: lube the shifter-cable in the tiller-handle as ours/parts doner were both frozen. After 13yrs with just oil changes the thermostat was stuck open, DUDH. The first day of the Pacific Halibut Opener was decent with limits of mixed grade. B & B

Awesome! How does the new power compare to the old?

Totally different. The F100 never was enough power(even with 4-blade) and struggled to get 3nmpg. Got much worse when 'heavy' for tuna and #500+ of ice. Now with 140 and 4-blade (Solas 13-3/4"x17" like everyone here is running) it doesn't bog-down on swells and easily get 3nmpg+. Have a nice SS 3-blade 19" but with all the debris we don't dare run it. That's slightly better economy and gained 3-4 knots on all speeds. The days of slugging around at 14kts are over (with exception of ocean conditions of course). B & B

Good to hear you like your new power.  If I recall you are running out of the Columbia?  Slugging around at about 14 knots is not all that uncommon in the pacific northwest.  the ocean conditions last year were not that great.  I find I can rarely run 20 mph outside the bar.   Hoping for good weather this year.  Salmon quota on the Oregon coast looks promising.
