My Jumbo's trip
« on: July 10, 2008, 12:24:06 PM »
The Crystal Dawn took a trip without me.  My son and 2 friends went to Seward for a day of fishing on Tuesday.  I had a work event that kept me from going.  The left about 12:30 Tuesday morning, took a little nap in the parking lot and launched about 5:30.  They ran to Mary's Bay on Rugged Island first to fish the high tide for Halibut.  No luck but the arrow tooth flounder were thick.  After tide change the went across to Pony Cove and anchored up for a little power nap.

I have purchased a SPOT messenger and it has an I'm OK feature that allows a predefined email to be sent that includes GPS coordinates and a Google Map link.  Justin would send a message when they changed location and when they caught fish so I am able to see where they are going and get an idea of how they are doing.  It also allows my wife to relax and not worry so much.  Even though Justin is 28 he is still my wife's little boy.  I guess he will always be that way.

After napping an hour or so they run to Aialik Cape and get into some rock fish and halibut.  Nothing big but 2 butts about 15 - 20 lbs.  Catch and release some quill backs.

After a bit the ran to Notoa Island and Harbor Island where they got into some Ling cod.  They caught several and kept a 37", a 42" and a 47".

Then they ran into Aialik Bay a bit and drifted off of Chat Island, Chat Cove, and Cliff's bay.  They continued to catch and release some stuff but I am not sure what as I was working, (do I sound a bit bitter, sorry).

They ran back by way of Eldorado Narrows but because they had Ling cod on board they were unable to fish inside Resurrection Bay.

Total round trip approximately 97 miles.

Final tally of fish kept, 2 chicken Hbutt, 2 Yellow Eye, and 3 Ling cod.

They saw humpbacks eat some seagull, killers with pups, seals and birds everywhere.

Total time on water was about 17 hours.  Fishing wasn't fast and furious but enough to keep their interest.  It was slow enough that they covered a lot of territory hunting.  Their plan was no hook up in an hour let's look elsewhere.

Pictures to come.

Ken what a great report! The fishing may not have been up to Alaskan standards, but *I* sure would have been happy and it seems like your son and his friends had a great trip. Thanks for the report and the great pictures.

Thanks Bruce.  It is actually a little hard to see the boat go out without me.  Justin cares as much as I do about it so that makes it easier.  He gave the interior a good scrubbing and rearranged the interior to his liking.  Looks good to me.

Since you usually like to see photo's I am including some more just for you.  I hope you enjoy them.  Perhaps one day you will get back up here and we can go out on a photo safari.

He was showing me pictures and described the whale incident.  They were watching the birds feeding on needle fish.  They were thick and dimpling the top of the water.  Birds diving like crazy when suddenly the whale came up with mouth agape eating the needle fish.  He said there were several birds that were slow taking off and went for a ride like Jonah.  He missed photographing the actual event.  He had just taken a picture of the birds feeding and then the whale as it was starting back down.  Here are the pictures that we were viewing as he described the action.  I threw in a couple more for good measure.

Great story and thanks for the fish pictures with the names on them, helps those of us not familiar with the ocean fish know what you are catching. Also have not seen where you troll for salmon at all, or is season not open yet, just wondering.

I have not been out salmon fishing yet.  The silvers are just getting in.  I may go next week.  We will fish the same general area in Resurrection Bay.  We usually anchor up and jig at Pony Cove or if weather is nice slip around the cape and fish Three Hole Bay in Aialik Bay.  If boats aren't to thick I may drift and mooch.  I want to try the motor mooching technique I read and posted about in fishing techniques.  I have found that the salmon are on the move so you can chase them or relax and let them find you.  I seem to get about the same results as those trolling the same area.  Truth be told the family enjoys halibut and yellow eye for eating over salmon.  I like to catch salmon more though.

amazing how in different areas the fishing techinques are so different for the same species of fish. Around here (michigan) everyone trolls using spoons or plugs, very little live or cut type bait and few people jig for salmon and this is only in the river mouths. Hope to launch in a week or two so hopefully I will get some fish blood on my nice white paint ;D

I never understood why folks got all excited catching silvers on a rod.  Then I went out to Resserection bay with my boss's last year, and had an absolute blast.  We used either a hoochie with a 2 oz banana sinker with a bit of herring on the hook, or a buzz bomb.  Also the 3oz point wilson dart jigs work well.  The combination of a medium weight rod and a good fight make for a good time.  We ended up with 10 silvers.

People do troll for silvers, but if the action is good is so much easier to jig or mooch.

I fish Lake Michigan and I have never seen anyone drifting and jigging out there. I guess it would work since once a school is located and marked on the gps we just keep trolling back through the area. Might have to try jigging in the marked spot, others might think I'm crazy wouldn't be the first time though.

What do the fish feed on?  Our silvers are chasing schools of herring, so something imitating a wounded herring seems to do the trick.

Primary bait fish here are alwives. The fish here seem to be rather picky about color from day to day also.
