Casco Bay Cleanup video
« on: October 02, 2018, 01:45:28 PM »
Last Saturday Maine Island Trail Association had their fall island cleanup. 36 volunteers went out in eight different boats to clean up the islands on the trail.  I brought my boat as usual as one of the volunteer boats.  Within my crew I had a professional photographer (www.debdawsonphotography.com) who brought along her photography gear including a go pro type video camera.  I'm posting the video here because it really gives a good closeup of the effectiveness of the 3" Widebody chine flats while moving at speed.  If I remember correctly, we were moving at 4000 rpm/18 knots when the footage from outside the hull was taken.  It was a dead flat calm morning, but still I was impressed by the fact that the chine flats directed all the water away from the hull before it ever got near the side spray rails in the forward half of the boat.  At the aft end where the boat is deeper in the water, some of the water gets up the hull before it's directed outward by the side spray rails.

So theoretically speaking, the side spray rails are more important, at least in conditions like this, in the rear half of the hull, which makes it all the more puzzling that many production glass boats, like the Eastern pictured here, only put the spray rails in the forward hull.

Nice work in both areas,,, People seem to overlook the amount of trash that just washes up on most shores . Its great to see people continue to clean up the messes some humans make without a thought.  I hate it when I see people throwing their trash overboard without giving it a thought.  In the olden days people would actually dump their line from their fishing reels without a thought. That would drive me crazy. And that stuff is impossible to clean up.

A lot of the stuff we find is accidental like one shoe, sandal or glove.  What drives me crazy are the mylar balloons.  I find at least one washed up on the rocks on every monitor run I do for MITA.

Nice  camera work, and skiff too.Seen some of the older craft had rear spray rails(below)

We make it a point to always come back with some debris. Good for a M.O.B. drill and keeps the crew looking out. Usually a hat, fender, minnow bucket or balloon. Most folks down my way are pretty good not trashing the waters, mostly accidental.
This summer I picked up 58 pieces of 5/4x6x10", all floating in a breadcrumb trail. Didn't take long to find the house with the brand new deck hanging over the bulkhead. Guy was pretty indignant when i threw them all back into his yard!
