NJ New Build
« on: January 31, 2023, 06:45:48 PM »
Hey everyone! After lurking/planning for a few months I finally pulled the trigger and ordered a jumbo kit from Jim at Salt Water Workshop,  picked up the pieces yesterday (looks great thanks again Jim!) the epoxy and glass order should arrive tomorrow. Any tips/advice you can think of for a first time builder would be greatly appreciated. I plan on starting a build thread once I actually get some work done as I’m sure I’ll be asking a ton of questions/opinions through out the build. Just wanted to introduce myself and say thanks for all the inspiration - don’t think I’d be here without all the great info and awesome builds on this forum. Cheers! - Bob Fix

To what length are you planning on ... the original 22', or a stretch?

Congrats on your start!

Welcome aboard!
Best tip I can give is, don't give up. Discouragement will happen, quitting must not.

Built 2003 as J22 and first stretched Jumbo, we're 23-7. Had my twin brother as partner and 4months to flip and 5months to splash. Build Fast- Fish Sooner!!! Hard to motivate at first but real kick is once to flip as it actually looks like a boat. B & B

The top 3 things I learned the hard way:
- mostly follow the book. If you think have you figured out something new, chances are... the reason not to do it that way is in the book.
- Shop around! Glass goes on sale, amazon sometimes has cheap jamestown stuff. I got a 25 gallon below deck gas tank from west marine for $400. I have had a good experience with epoxyking.net
- SAEFTY. Search for "Jallii' on here, but be super careful about sanding/scraping/inhaling uncured epoxy. Stuff takes weeks to fully cure. Don't get it on your skin. Do not skimp on safety gear... I like the 3m masks and cartridges, but it has been hard to avoid the knock-offs on amazon.

My favorite websites:

Awesome. Have fun making sawdust!
